Sorrento Coast is the most visited area of the Sorrentine Peninsula and comprises a large tourist area made up of: Sorrento city, Sant’Agnello, Puolo and Capo of Sorrento. All places are within 2 / 3 km from the centre of Sorrento and overlook the bay of Naples and Vesuvius.
The most famous is certainly Sorrento that was visited by famous poets, literary men, musicians and composers, like Goethe, Lord Byron, Wagner, Ibsen.
The enchanting spot, the old and fascinating historical centre, the mild climate and the wonderful view of the Vesuvius are only few reasons to visit this unforgettable place and choose Sorrento as your vacation destination.
In the past it was called Surrentum because the legend says that some sirens lived in the rocks of the town.
Sorrento, in fact, stays on a tufaceous rock, only 50mts high from the sea.
We suggest to visit: the Correale Museum, the cloister and the church of San Francesco, the Sedil Dominova, the Duomo and the Villa Comunale, a big terrace surrounded by flowers and trees from which you can enjoy the beauty of all the Gulf of Naples.
Sant'Agnello borders the municipality of Sorrento. This place is more quiet and less expensive than the centre of Sorrento to which it is connected by regular buses along Corso Italia from Piazza Tasso and by the Circumvesuviana train, which is a narrow gauge railway linking it also with Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples.
There are restaurants and bars around Piazza Sant'Agnello and near the coast, with great views. Views from Sant'Agnello's cliffs are as stunning as those from Sorrento and the typical beach area is reached by steep steps/lift.
Capo of Sorrento is a suggestive promontory that closes on the east the bay of Sorrento and borders the car road towards Massa Lubrense, which has in the inner side the volcanic cliffs falling sheer on the sea.
The road which leads to Capo di Sorrento is pleasantly panoramic and on its sides many hotels has been built in last 40 years.
In this area there are the famous baths of Queen Joan, “I Bagni della Regina Giovanna”: a beautiful rocky complex on the sea where you can still admire the ruins of an ancient Roman villa. The landscape is divided among the sight of the Gulf of Naples, with Vesuvius and Capri on the background, and cultivations typical of the Sorrento Coast, such as citrus orchards and olive groves.
Puolo is a charming and panoramic area located after the Capo of Sorrento, between the territory of Sorrento and Massa Lubrense. Puolo is one of the most frequented beach resorts of the Sorrento coast, famous for its delightful small fishing village and for its beach “Marina di Puolo”, one of the finest beaches on the Sorrento Peninsula.
Thanks to its inhabitant's ability in making it a nice and cosy place, Marina di Puolo has kept intact its main characteristics, offering a very special landscape with an agglomerate of characteristics houses that gently towards the sea. Marina di Puolo, with a population of about 150 people, is now also pretty well-known for its cuisine, obviously fish based.
